While the history of Seiko itself can be traced back to 1881 when Kintaro Hattori first opened his shop in Ginza to sell and repair timepieces, it was not until 1913 that the company actually produced Japan’s first wristwatch. That monumental step led to one innovation after another over the decades, including the world’s first quartz wristwatch in 1969. This year, for the 110th anniversary celebration of Seiko watchmaking, a series of commemorative watches will be released, drawing inspiration from the brand’s rich heritage.
And here we are already with the first timepiece in the series. The Seiko Watchmaking 110th Anniversary Seiko Prospex Save the Ocean Limited Edition (SPB333J) watch is distinguished by the textured dial that remind one of the landscapes and the seascapes of the Arctic and the Antarctic – the hostile environments where Seiko watches earned the reputation of durability after having been worn by adventurers and researchers in the 1960s and the 1970s. In fact, the case and dial design of the SPB333J is borrowed directly form the Seiko 6105-8000 diver’s watch of 1968. Beating inside the curved stainless steel case is the self-winding Caliber 6R35 with 70 hours of power reserve. In addition to the 5-row bracelet, a polyester strap made of recycled plastic bottles is included in the set. The latter’s unique Japanese braiding pattern ensures both flexibility and air permeability for the greatest comfort on the wrist.
This limited edition of 5,000 pieces joins the Save the Ocean series which constitutes the mission of Seiko Prospex to preserve the oceans for future generations through provision of financial and other support to selected marine charities.
