Barceló Hotel Group has opened the doors to Barceló Nura in Sant Lluís in the south of Menorca, just 1.5 km from the famous Punta Prima beach. Following an investment of over 20 million euros, the newly built hotel has 128 rooms, 45 of which have access to a semi-private pool and has been designed with one thing in mind: respect for the environment.
Barceló Nura’s design was conceptualised by Menorcan architecture studio FG Arquitectes, with architects Cristina Farreny and Rafael García at the helm and the island’s natural terrain was carefully considered in the creation of the hotel. Declared a Biosphere Reserve in 1993, the island of Menorca has some of the best-preserved habitats in the Mediterranean, making it an ideal spot for Barceló Nura to establish itself as an environmentally conscious hotel.
“We wanted to create a discreet hotel with local DNA, traditional materials and natural colours where the water is integrated with the low-rise buildings to fit in with the surroundings and blend seamlessly with the natural environment”, says Gabriel Bugeda, from FUND FST.
Simple materials including natural stone have been used throughout the hotel, sourced from local artisans, reflecting the traditional Menorcan architecture of the island. Meticulous landscaping – integrating the island’s biodiversity – adds a pop of colour to the natural tones.
Crafts take centre stage in the interior design of the project, with minimalist and laidback features creating a serene ambience. Guest rooms feature ceramic works by some of the most celebrated artists on the Balearic Islands, honouring local culture and creativity.
In terms of sustainability, Barceló Nura reuses water, has low-energy lighting, energy-efficient hot water systems and smart air conditioning systems that limit the hotel’s electricity consumption.
The hotel is home to à la carte restaurant Sa Tanca, a buffet restaurant and a signature Barcelo B-Heaven terrace offering sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.
The name ‘Nura’ takes inspiration from the Phoenician’s influence on the island’s culture and is derived from the word ‘nur’, meaning fire.
Rooms at Barcelo Nura start from €103 per night on a B&B basis which can be booked at www.barcelo.com/en-gb/barcelo-nura
