Venezuelan President Maduro’s political alliance claimed a sweeping victory on Monday in congressional elections.


President Nicolas Maduro is hoping to consolidate power as Venezuela’s main opposition boycotts Sunday’s vote.

The vote, contested by about 14,000 candidates, comes with the country in a deep political and economic crisis.

Maduro’s Socialist Party-led alliance wins 67 percent of National Assembly seats in polls boycotted by the opposition.
