Thailand reported one fatality from COVID-19 and 198 new cases today (Saturday), while the CCSA spokesman Dr.Taweesin Visanuyothin tested negative for the virus, but is still required to isolate, according to CCSA deputy spokesperson Dr. Panprapa Yongtrakul.

Of the new infections, 111 were found during pro-active screening, 69 are those already under observation and 18 are among arrivals from abroad in state quarantine.

The latest fatality, the 72nd to date, was an 81-year old diabetic Thai man living in Phichit province, who suffered with chronic kidney and heart diseases and was infected by a family member who had travelled to Samut Sakhon province.

The victim was admitted to hospital on December 30th, after he had fainted, and was put on a respirator.  His condition improved on January 9th and the respirator was removed, but he was kept on oxygen until January 15th, when his condition worsened and was put on respirator again, until his death on Friday.

Of the imported cases, five were from Britain, four from Bahrain, two from the United Arab Emirates and one each from Sweden, India, Italy, Egypt, Russia, the United States and Switzerland.

Cumulative infections, since COVID-19 arrived in Thailand early last year, are 13,302, with 10,448 recoveries.

63 of Thailand’s 77 provinces have been affected by the contagion, since the second outbreak on December 18th, but thatnumber has started to fall as patients recover and are discharged from hospitals, said Dr. Panprapa.
