Samsung Electronics is accelerating its penetration into the Indian market by releasing an array of budget smartphone models.

The company has recently launched new models of the Galaxy A series, including the Galaxy A03, A13, A23, A33, A53 and A73, the Galaxy F23 and the Galaxy M33 in the Indian market. Experts say that the smartphone giant aims to ramp up its sales with a wide array of budget smartphones.

With a population of 1.4 billion, India is the world’s second-largest smartphone market after China. Its smartphone penetration rate is estimated at 41 percent in 2021.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, India’s smartphone shipments hit a record in 2021. According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, smartphone shipments in India reached 169 million units in 2021, up 11 percent from the previous year. Sales revenue hit US$38 billion (about 46.8 trillion won), up 27 percent from the previous year.

Samsung Electronics enjoyed an 18 percent share of the Indian smartphone market in 2021, ranking second after Xiaomi with 24 percent. In the mid- to low-priced smartphone segment, it recorded a market share of 28 percent. It plans to boost its share in this segment to 40 percent.
