The movement has boosted its activity since May, carrying out offensives in several regions. Recently, the militants managed to seize several provincial capitals, including Kandahar and Herat, which are the second and the third most populated Afghan cities respectively.

Sputnik is live from the Chaman border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan, as the Taliban* gains momentum, advancing across the country.

Clashes between the Taliban and the government have escalated since May, when the US and its allies started withdrawing their troops from Afghanistan, in accordance with a peace deal struck last year in Doha. Since then, the militants have seized considerable territories; currently, Kabul and Jalalabad remain the two main strongholds of the government’s forces, while other major cities have been claimed by the Taliban.

*The Taliban is a terrorist organisation banned in Russia and many other countries.
