LOS ANGELES: Omicron subvariants BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 accounted for nearly 70 percent of new cases of COVID-19 infection in the United States (US) as of last week, according to estimates released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday.

BQ.1.1 is estimated to account for 36.8 percent of cases as of Dec 10, while BQ.1 accounted for 31.1 percent, Xinhua reported citing the CDC report.

The BQ.1 and BQ.1.1 originating from the BA.5 Omicron subvariant have been spreading rapidly since October.

The subvariant replaced the BA.5 and became dominant in the United States in mid-November.
