ISTANBUL: A new strong earthquake may occur soon in the Turkiye port area of Canakkale on the Sea of Marmara following increased seismic activity there, Turkiye seismologist Dogan Perincek told Sputnik News Agency on Thursday.

On Monday, two earthquakes of magnitude 7.7 and 7.6 struck southern Turkiye.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan described the disaster as the strongest earthquake since 1939.

“For the past 10 days, I have recorded an increase in seismic activity in Canakkale from the direction of the Sea of Marmara. I have been involved in daily monitoring and analysis of seismic activity in this country using special maps for over 10 years. Three years from now, I am predicting an earthquake in Canakkale, ” said the scientist.

According to Perincek’s budget, it is possible that an earthquake measuring between 7 on the Richter scale strikes once every 250 years and the last earthquake in the region occurred 287 years ago.

“The time will come, tremors can start there at any time. My observations in the Sea of Marmara confirm this assumption,” said the seismologist.
