BMW and Mercedes-Benz in Tight Match in Imported Vehicle Market

BMW and Mercedes-Benz are in a tight race for the top spot in Korea’s imported vehicle market.

The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association announced on Dec. 5 that 28,222 imported cars were newly registered in November, up 50 percent from a year ago and up 11.3 percent from the previous month.

The cars include 7,734 Mercedes-Benz, 7,209 BMW, 2,615 Volvo, 1,943 Volkswagen and 1,667 Audi. More than 58 percent of the cars are less than 2,000 cc, followed by 2,000 to 2,999 (23 percent), 3,000 to 3,999 (7.6 percent) and at least 4,000 (1.5 percent).

85.9 percent, 9 percent and 5.1 percent were made by European, U.S. and Japanese automakers, respectively. 49.8 percent of the total are gasoline vehicles, followed by hybrid (27 percent), electric (9.6 percent), diesel (9.4 percent) and plug-in hybrid (4.3 percent).

The total imported car registration for January to November is 253,795, up 0.6 percent year on year. Those include 71,713 BMW and 71,525 Mercedes-Benz. Last year, their figures were 61,436 and 69,400, respectively. Mercedes-Benz topped the market in 2016 to 2021.
