Lamborghini กำลังอยู่ในช่วงหัวเลี้ยวหัวต่อของการเข้าสู่ยุคแห่งเครื่องยนต์ไฮบริด เราจึงขอใช้บทความนี้เพื่อเป็นเกียรติให้กับเครื่องยนต์วี 12 แบบอัดอากาศโดยธรรมชาติที่เป็นหัวใจสำคัญในการขับเคลื่อนรถซูเปอร์สปอร์ตของ Lamborghini มาแล้วหลายต่อหลายรุ่นตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1963
ตลอดระยะเวลาที่ผ่านมานี้ แบรนด์กระทิงดุสัญชาติอิตาเลียน Lamborghini เคยผลิตเครื่องยนต์วี 12 เพียงแค่ 2 ดีไซน์เท่านั้น ดีไซน์แรกเป็นผลงานการออกแบบของจิออตโต บิซซารินีซึ่งตั้งใจจะใช้เครื่องยนต์ดังกล่าวเพื่อพา Lamborghini เข้าสู่วงการรถแข่ง แต่ว่าเฟอรุชชิโอ ลัมโบร์กินีก็เลือกใช้เครื่องยนต์วี 12 รุ่นแรกนั้นในรถ Lamborghini 350 GT ซึ่งเป็นรถรุ่นใหม่ที่กำลังจะออกสู่ตลาดในเวลานั้นเสียเลย เมาริซิโอ เรจจิอานี อดีตประธานเจ้าหน้าที่ฝ่ายเทคนิคของแบรนด์กล่าวถึงอดีตว่า “เรื่องราวของ Lamborghini ถือกำเนิดขึ้นพร้อมกับเครื่องวี 12 นั้นเลย ในยุค 60 นั้นเครื่องวี 12 ถือว่าเป็นที่สุดของเทคโนโลยี ความลักชัวรีและความสปอร์ตในรถทุกคัน”
รถยนต์ระดับไอค่อนของ Lamborghini ที่ได้ใช้เครื่องวี 12 รุ่นนี้ในภายหลัง ได้แก่ รุ่น Miura ในปี ค.ศ. 1966 รุ่น Countach ในปี ค.ศ. 1971 รถเอสยูวีรุ่น LM 002 ในปี ค.ศ. 1986 รุ่น Diablo ในปี ค.ศ. 1990 และสุดท้ายคือรุ่น Murcielago ในปี ค.ศ. 2001 ขนาดของเครื่องยนต์วี 12 ของ Lamborghini ก็มีขนาดใหญ่ขึ้นตามกาลเวลาด้วย เริ่มต้นจากขนาด 3.5 ลิตรในสมัยของ 350 GT แล้วไปสุดที่ 6.5 ลิตรในรุ่น Murcielago ความจุของเครื่องยนต์ที่เพิ่มขึ้นนั้นทำให้ตัวเครื่องมีความยาวมากขึ้นด้วยจนต้องมีการย้ายจุดศูนย์ถ่วงให้กระเถิบมาทางด้านหลังอย่างต่อเนื่องตั้งแต่ปี ค.ศ. 1963-2010 จากเริ่มแรกที่วางเครื่องยนต์ไว้ทางด้านหน้าในรุ่น 350 GT ก็มีการหมุน 90 องศาเพื่อวางขวางตรงกลางลำในรุ่น Miura แล้วจากนั้นจึงหมุนต่ออีก 90 องศาเพื่อวางกลางตามความยาวของรถในรุ่น Countach เพื่อช่วยปรับสมดุลน้ำหนักให้เหมาะสม

Aventador เป็น Lamborghini รุ่นสุดท้ายที่ได้ใช้เครื่องยนต์วี 12 แบบอัดอากาศโดยธรรมชาติตามแบบฉบับดั้งเดิมจริงๆ รถรุ่นใหม่ที่จะออกจากนี้ไปจะมีเครื่องยนต์ไฮบริด และ Lamborghini มีเป้าหมายในการเปิดตัวรถยนต์ที่ขับเคลื่อนด้วยพลังงานไฟฟ้าโดยสมบูรณ์ก่อนสิ้นทศวรรษนี้

From the 350 GT to the Aventador, V12 engines have served Lamborghini well for six full decades.

As Lamborghini enters a new phase of hybridisation, we take a deliberate pause to look at the history of their naturally aspirated V12 engine which served as a beating heart of several super sports car models since 1963.
Lamborghini produced only two designs of the V12 engine over the decades. The very first one was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini back in the days. The idea in the beginning was to have an engine that allowed Lamborghini to enter the world of racing. However, a decision was made by Ferruccio Lamborghini to put it in the 350 GT which was a new model coming out at the time. Former Chief Technical Officer Maurizio Reggiani recalls, “The Lamborghini story was born with the V12. It is clear that, in the 1960s, the V12 represented the pinnacle of technology, luxury and sportiness of every car.”
Several iconic Lamborghinis were mounted with the V12, namely the Miura in 1966, the Countach in 1971, the LM 002 SUV in 1986, the Diablo in 1990 and the Murcielago in 2001. Engine size also evolved with the cars from 3.5-litre in the 350 GT to 6.5-litre in the Murcielago. The increased capacity resulted in a longer engine and the need to move the centre of gravity toward the rear of the car. This is why the engine was mounted in different positions from 1963 to 2010, beginning with the front in the 350 GT. Then, it was rotated 90 degrees to a transverse orientation for the in rear-mid engine layout in the Miura. Further 90 degrees rotation to a longitudinal rear-mid position was done for the Countach to help balance weight distribution.
The second, all-new V12 engine by Lamborghini was not unveiled until 2011 for the Aventador. With a 6.5-litre displacement, this engine is capable of delivering 690 hp at 8,250 rpm. Subsequent modifications followed, concluding with the 780 hp version for the Aventador Ultimae in 2021. Note also that the new engine was developed during a very different time, and Lamborghini managed to deliver something incredible while also having to meet the Euro 5 emission standards, as well as all requirements mandated by the firm’s parent group.
Today, the Aventador is the last Lamborghini to use a pure and naturally aspirated V12 engine. Future products will have a hybrid engine, with the ultimate goal of offering a fully electric car later in this decade.
