After over 18 months of research, COMO The Treasury launched its first spirit, Horizon Gin, along with four individual Cape Arid tea blends. In celebration of the new Cape Aria Rooms’ at COMO Hotels and Resorts, the latest products will take centre stage at the hotel’s Cape Arid Afternoon Tea Experience.
Byron Wright, Executive General Manager of Perth’s State Buildings, explained that COMO The Treasury offers a unique Western Australian experience.
“We give our guests an experience of WA’s iconic Cape Arid legion through art, food, and drink in a beautiful place like COMO The Treasury Cape Arid Rooms.”
The Horizon Gin and tea blends coincide with the fourth instalment of COMO’s Afternoon Teas, Cape Arid Rooms Seal Creek Edition Afternoon Tea. Named after Seal Creek in the Cape Arid National Park, the creek is renowned for its beautiful, sweeping beaches, dazzling blue seas, and rocky headlands. The new rooms in COMO received their name from the Cape Arid watercolour and ink paintings on its walls, created by Alex and Phillippa Nikulinsky.
The four new teas include Hill Springs, Thomas River, Tagon Bay, and Seal Creek – all named after iconic parts in Cape Arid National Park, locations that inspired Nikulinsky’s artwork. The teas were developed by master blender David Levi of Perth’s Teassential, their flavours ranging from sencha, river mint, finger lime, and globe amaranth to strawberry gum.
David Price, Esperance Distillery Co-Head Distiller, stated that the Horizon Gin “is Cape Arid in a bottle!”
“My son and I embarked on an expedition to Cape Arid to forage wild botanicals in consultation with the traditional owners. Our mission was to create a spirit that unlocks the region’s flavour.”
Their goal was to find botanicals unique to Cape Arid and create a gin bouquet that depicted each original flavour – quintessential to Nikulinsky’s artwork. Their result was a beautifully complex, hand-crafted gin with a tea tree, floral boronia crescendo, and minty lemon zest.
