Explora Journeys has unveiled the details of its first six ships, EXPLORA I, which will sail from Southampton in the United Kingdom on 17 July 2023.

Under the theme ‘A Maiden Journey into Epic Fjords and the Arctic Circle,’ the brand will debut with a 15-night initial voyage through Northern Europe, calling at 12 ports in four countries.

“Our vision and purpose from day one has been to create a travel and ocean experience like no other,” said Michael Ungerer, Chief Executive Officer of Explora Journeys. “We are thrilled that our ground-breaking new class of ship, EXPLORA I, will introduce guests during her maiden voyage to some of the most breathtaking destinations in Northern Europe while enjoying the finest luxury hospitality at sea.”

I will call Zeebrugge, Belgium, Geiranger, Trondheim, Molde, Leknes, Brnnysund, Flm, Bergen, and Stavanger, Norway, before sailing to Denmark and visiting Skagen and Copenhagen, the country’s capital city.

“Guests on board EXPLORA I’s initial cruise can expect to immerse themselves in local cultures, both on and off the main road, as well as view some of the world’s most stunning natural treasures,” Mr Ungerer continued. Surprise pleasures, such as exhilarating activities, thoughtful presents, and intriguing guest performers, will be revealed during their journey, all meant to excite the discerning travellers’ desire to discover the world around them, meet new people, and reconnect with themselves.”

Guests may leave Zeebrugge to see neighbouring Bruges’ historic buildings, cobblestone alleys, gorgeous canals, and clean gardens. They will go north through Norway’s stunning western coastline, where the Atlantic meets the Arctic. Its stunning fjords are rated as “the greatest unspoilt travel destinations in the world” by UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

At the mouth of the Geirangerfjord, Geirangerfjord is the epitome of a little Nordic community. The fjord is so well-known that it has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site; it is particularly famed for the wild, tumbling Seven Sisters, one of the world’s ten tallest waterfalls.

Trondheim was Norway’s Viking capital until 1217, and its harbour goes back to 997. Its magnificent mediaeval Nidaros Cathedral is a worthy homage to its illustrious history.

Molde, also known as the City of Roses because of its profusion of fragrant summer blossoms, is surrounded by 222 rising, snow-capped peaks and has some of the prettiest boutiques and cafés.

Leknes is located on Vestvgya, one of the six Lofoten Islands in Norway’s Arctic Circle. Thanks to the Gulf Stream and constant sunshine, it has tropical beaches, horseback riding, sea eagles, and jaw-dropping scenery.

Brnnysund may be the only town with a lovely bathing lake right in the heart of the city. It also includes a mountain with a massive hole visible through it, a bustling marina and spectacular hiking trails.

Flm’s railway is one of the most breathtaking train excursions in the world, travelling by jaw-dropping natural beauties, including the Naeryfjord, another Norwegian entry on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Bryggen, Bergen’s 14th-century Hanseatic wharf, gives visitors their first view of a city overflowing with arts, crafts, and food stalls. Its world-class restaurants make it a deserving member of UNESCO’s network of cities of gastronomy.

Stavanger’s colourful old town has rustic cobblestone streets, elegantly maintained white wooden buildings, a delightful café culture, craft stores, museums, and a dynamic nightlife. Beyond the town, breathtaking scenery and picturesque beaches are just waiting to be discovered. This is the ship’s final stop in Norway.

Skagen is Denmark’s northernmost point, where the Baltic Sea meets the North Sea. Its rich artistic past is a testament to the numerous painters drawn to Skagen’s distinctively transparent light. Skagen is known for its fantastic seafood, architecture, and the massive migratory dune at Rbjerg Mile.

EXPLORA will arrive in Copenhagen on 1 August. This city is a cultural centre, with architectural styles spanning from mediaeval to Renaissance to contemporary, as well as some of the world’s top fine-dining restaurants. It’s also perhaps the trendiest, hippest city in Scandinavia. It is a wonderful way to end a voyage that guests will never forget.
