Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) will supply hydrogen fuel cell systems to FAUN Group, a German commercial vehicle manufacturer. This will mark the first time that HMG’s hydrogen fuel cell system is used for mass production of commercial vehicles by another automaker.

HMG recently signed a contract with ENGINIUS, a subsidiary of FAUN Group, to supply its hydrogen fuel cell system HTWO. It will supply about 1,100 units of the 90kW hydrogen fuel cell system, which is used for Hyundai Motor Co.’s Nexo hydrogen-powered car, over the next three years.

HMG could win the supply deal thanks to Nexo’s success, which proved the performance of its hydrogen fuel cell technology. The hydrogen car Nexo, which was launched by Hyundai Motor Co. in 2018, has a localization rate of 99 percent. It is the world’s best-selling hydrogen-powered car. According to SNE Research, 9,591 units of the Nexo were sold worldwide between January and October of this year, far ahead of second-place Toyota Mirai (2,897 units).

ENGINIUS mainly produces eco-friendly trucks. It plans to use HMG’s fuel cells in manufacturing FAUN Group’s cleaning truck Blue Power. Blue Power is a hydrogen truck that collects waste, and 60 Blue Power trucks are already in use. Beginning from the second half of 2023, HMG’s hydrogen fuel cell system will go into Blue Power trucks.

FAUN Group will also install HMG’s hydrogen fuel cell system in the City Power, a new medium-sized cargo truck. The City Power will begin its test run in 2024 and begin full-scale operation in downtown areas in 2025.
