LIMA, Peru—Peruvian President Dina Boluarte proposed holding early elections in the wake of deadly protests in support of her predecessor, Pedro Castillo, who was ousted by lawmakers after he tried to dissolve Congress.
Ms. Boluarte said in a televised address Monday that she would send a proposal to Congress to hold presidential and legislative elections in April 2024, which would cut the term she has to complete by two years. Ms. Boluarte said she would also propose constitutional reforms to Peru’s political system, which has had six presidents since 2018.
