Hours later, Israel responds with airstrikes against Palestinian groups in Gaza
JERUSALEM—Militants fired dozens of rockets from Lebanon into Israel on Thursday, a rare escalation that the Israeli army responded to hours later with a wave of airstrikes against Palestinian groups in Gaza that it held responsible for the barrage.
The unusual burst of violence from Lebanon sparked fears of a broader conflict between Israel and its neighbors during a period of high tension over one of Jerusalem’s holiest sites. Military analysts said the rocket attack was the largest since 2006, when Israel and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah fought a 34-day war.
