Seattle police investigating after man shot, killed in robbery at restaurant in Mount Baker

Seattle police are looking for three suspects they say shot and killed a man in South Seattle over the weekend.

Police said the shooting happened Saturday at around 8:30 p.m. inside Rainier Teriyaki, on the corner of Rainer Avenue South and Walden Street.

“After gathering more information, it appears it was a robbery in progress, and during that robbery, one of the suspects ended up shooting one of our victims,” said Seattle police Chief Adrian Diaz.

Officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

Diaz said they are looking for three suspects.

“Right now, it appears that the suspect had their face covered,” said Diaz.

KIRO7 talked with a nearby business owner who said the incident was too close for comfort.

“It’s concerning because if they can do that on the other side they can easily walk over like two, three steps over to our side, and luckily it didn’t happen, and luckily the customer I had in here was able to leave safely.”

The woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, said she didn’t hear the gunfire, but given the response from police, she knew it was something serious.

“I went over to ask the daughter, to like see what’s going on, and she was really distressed and said someone shot her dad, it was a robbery and they shot her dad. Was her dad the owner? Mhhm … It didn’t sink in until you know we heard that he passed away in the hospital,” said the woman.

The woman said she’s known the man for more than 10 years and that he was well-known in the neighborhood.

“Everyone here in the community is with (the victim’s family). If they need any help, we are willing to help no matter what. It’s a big loss to the community because they’ve been here a long time, and everyone knows each other,” said the woman.
