This cosmetics brand is highlighting narratives that showcase how make-up can be a tool for self-actualization and empowerment.

This is an excerpt from Lifestyle Asia’s April 2023 Issue.

As Rupaul Andre Charles—founder of RuPaul’s Drag Race—once said, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.” Every person is a blank canvas that’s waiting to be painted on. Our life, experiences, and advocacies shape who we are and how we express ourselves.

This is the message that Estée Lauder Philippines wants to impart with its newest partner, celebrity fashion photographer BJ Pascual—whose works have been featured in some of the country’s most prestigious magazines and shows like Asia’s Next Top Model

The popular cosmetics brand celebrated this collaboration through a fun night of music, cocktails, and empowering narratives at Whitespace Manila, which took place last February 28.

Pascual was welcomed by Estée Lauder’s brand general manager Gay Lao Chen in the presence of notable figures from the beauty and fashion industry, participating in a variety of make-up demos using the brand’s Double Wear foundation.

One of the most exciting parts of the evening was the unveiling of Pascual’s Double Wear story—one of the five stories chosen to be part of the brand’s regional campaign My Shade, My Story. During the reveal, Pascual shared more details about his experiences, encouraging guests to embrace their destiny and individuality.

After the program, attendees were treated to the awesome beats of DJ Xtina Superstar while they sipped on premium cocktails from The Botanist Gin and Remy Martin.

A CREATIVE OUTLET FOR A CREATIVE COMMUNITY

As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Pascual understands the importance of make-up in self expression. The queer community in the Philippines has been growing thanks to increasingly progressive movements and shows like Drag Race Philippines. Many of its members are avid users of makeup, since it helps them channel their inner artistry—something especially evident in recent years. There’s no denying that cosmetics have become a special conduit for self-actualization and empowerment amongst different groups of people.
