Rolex was there as early aviators took to the skies during the golden age of aviation in the 1930s. Several pilots were known to have set records while wearing an Oyster watch by Rolex, or to have used one as an on-board chronometer.
The name “Air-King” first appeared on the dial in 1958 and became a household name over the decades. The current aesthetics of the Oyster Perpetual Air-King was established in 2016 with a triangular marker at the top of the black dial, large numerals at three, six and nine o’clock positions, and graduation of prominent minutes for the remaining positions.
In 2022, the Oyster Perpetual Air-King is given a major yet subtle refresh. The 40 mm Oyster case is completely redesigned to have a crown guard and straight sides like the majority of watches in the Professional watches category. It is equipped with a Twinlock winding crown, fitted with a double waterproofness system, guaranteeing waterproofness to a depth of 100 metres. The Oyster bracelet was redesigned with a new proportion where the centre link has been broadened. This is also the first time the Oyster Perpetual Air-King is equipped with the Oysterlock safety clasp.
Perhaps, the quickest way to identify the new Oyster Perpetual Air-King is to check for the number “0” in front of “5” on the minute scale. The addition was made to improve the symmetry of the dial – each 5-minute interval is now marked by two digits. Optimised Chromalight display guarantees maximum legibility in dark conditions. The luminescent material is applied to the hands, the triangular hour marker at 12 o’clock and the three numerals at three, six and nine o’clock. A green second hand completes the emblematic look of the new generation Air-King.
The self-winding movement beating inside is calibre 3230 which was introduced in 2020. Its Chronergy escapement, made of nickel-phosphorous, is insensitive to magnetic fields while the blue Parachrom hairspring ensures the movement’s regularity in any position.
Designed to conquer the open seas, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master is an emblematic sailing timepiece that no way alters its course. Originally launched in 1992, this Professional-category watch is designed for skippers and navigators. It is instantly recognisable by the raised and polished graduations and numerals against the matt background of the Cerachrom bezel insert, offering a perfect blend of functionality and nautical style. One could say that the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master is as comfortable on the water as off it.
For the first time, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 with calibre 3235 is produced in 18 ct yellow gold. This new version continues to feature a bidirectional rotatable bezel and the aforementioned Cerachrom insert in black. Its 18 ct yellow gold hands and the 18 ct yellow gold hour markers on the black lacquer dial are filled or coated with the optimised Chromalight display. The luminescent material, exclusive to Rolex, guarantees a longer-lasting intense glow in the dark and a brighter white hue while in daylight.
It is also important to note that the bezel can be turned with ease as its knurled edge offers excellent grip. Comfort is ensured by the use of the Oysterflex bracelet – an innovation developed and patented by Rolex. An Oysterflex bracelet combines the robustness of a metal bracelet with the flexibility of an elastomer strap. Curved metal blades are overmoulded with high-performance black elastomer which is highly durable against environmental effects.
On this new version of the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42, the Oysterflex bracelet is secured to the wrist by the Oysterlock folding safety clasp in 18 ct yellow gold. Bracelet length adjustment is made possible by the Glidelock extension system which comprises six notches of approximately 2.5 mm each.
Both the Oyster Perpetual Air-King and the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master 42 are Superlative Chronometer certified. This standard of excellence was established by Rolex in 2015. It involves a series of tests conducted internally at Rolex on fully assembled watches to verify their precision, waterproofness, power reserve and self-winding efficiency. This ensures that Superlative Chronometer timepieces perform within the deviation tolerance of +2/-2 seconds per day. As such, they are symbolized by the green seal and the confidence of an international 5-year guarantee.
