FORT PIERCE — A man Fort Pierce Police say sped away Friday during a traffic stop in a stolen vehicle, later crashed and died from his injuries after being pulled from a canal, according to a department media release.
At about 5:30 p.m. Friday, an unidentified person reported their black 2014 Hyundai stolen from the 1300 block of North 25th Street. About 30 minutes later Fort Pierce Police officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, according to spokesperson April Lee.
The 46-year-old male driver, whom police and Florida Highway Patrol did not identify, failed to stop and while fleeing police, ran the Hyundai off the road and overturned into a water-filled canal at North 17th Street and Canal Terrace.
Officers entered the canal, pulled the man from the vehicle, and took lifesaving measures. The man was transported to HCA Florida Lawnwood Hospital, where he died. Police did not release his name or residence.
